best
friend
from
Glasgow
University.
He
was
a
Church
of
Scotland
minister
at
that
time
at
St
John’s,
Kensington,
London.
He
volunteered
as
a
Chaplain
for
the
Seaforth
Highlanders,
and
went
with
them
to
the
Western
Front.
Finally,
however,
he
felt
he
had
to
train
as
a
combatant
and
he
was
killed
with
most
of
his
Battalion
on
the
third
day
of
the
Battle
of
Arras,
11
April
1917,
aged
33.
JB
gave
an
eulogy
at
his
memorial
service on 21 June 1917. He is buried in Brown’s Copse Cemetery, Roeux
